Pet-friendly Dubrovnik
What a traveller with a dog or cat needs to know about Dubrovnik, Southern Dalmatia: rules, beaches, restaurants, parks, vets, stays and day trips.
Last verified: 5 May 2026
Dubrovnik is the most heat-sensitive city on this list and the one where time of day matters most. The old town inside the walls is open to leashed dogs at street level, and the polished limestone Stradun is the postcard walk, but it cooks. Lapad and Babin Kuk to the west carry the practical pet base: shaded forest paths, rock-entry coves and the longest-staying small-animal vet capacity in southern Dalmatia. The Pelješac bridge from 2022 means EU-paperwork pets driving from Split no longer leave the EU.

Frequently asked: pets in Dubrovnik
Are dogs allowed inside the Dubrovnik old town walls?
Leashed dogs walk through the Stradun and the alleys of the old town freely. The 2 km walk on top of the city walls is a ticketed attraction with stairs and narrow passages; rules vary by season, check at the entrance.
Where can dogs swim near Dubrovnik?
Pet-tolerant rocky coves sit between Lapad and Babin Kuk, and there are marked dog beach sections at Sveti Jakov east of the old town. The main town beaches restrict pets in summer.
Can I take a dog on the cable car up Srđ?
Small dogs in carriers are usually accepted on the Dubrovnik cable car; larger dogs depend on the operator and the car capacity at the time. Confirm at the lower station before queueing.
Are dogs allowed on Jadrolinija boats to the Elaphiti islands?
Leashed dogs travel on most Elaphiti routes from Gruž port; small dogs in a carrier are typically free, larger dogs pay a partial fare. Day-tour boats often refuse pets in summer; the scheduled ferry is the safer option.
Where is the nearest 24/7 vet to Dubrovnik?
Dubrovnik has small-animal clinics in Lapad and Mokošica with daytime cover; the rotating on-call vet is published weekly. The single hospital with full out-of-hours capacity in southern Dalmatia is in Dubrovnik proper.
How does the Bosnia-Herzegovina Neum corridor affect a dog road trip?
The Pelješac bridge bypasses Neum entirely as of 2022, so EU-paperwork pets travelling between Split and Dubrovnik no longer need to enter and re-enter the EU. Driving the old D8 still routes through Neum, where BiH border rules apply.
