Rijeka is the working Kvarner hub: less resort-polished than Opatija, but stronger for transport, veterinary depth and bad-weather backup. Leashed dogs fit well on Korzo, the Molo Longo breakwater and the Trsat castle approach if you plan around heat and stairs. It is also the practical base for road trips to Krk, Crikvenica, Opatija and Ucka without committing to an island ferry schedule.

Pet city facts

Public transport
Autotrolej is the city bus network; travel with a carrier for small dogs and leash plus muzzle ready for larger dogs, especially on busy coastal lines.
Summer heat
Korzo and the port paving get hot by late morning. Use Trsat steps early, then move to shaded parks or the Preluk/Costabella coast.

Frequently asked: pets in Rijeka

  • Are dogs allowed on the beaches?

Rijeka is not the easiest swim base, but the Costabella, Kantrida and Preluk coastlines have rocky access points and marked local rules. Main bathing areas can restrict pets in summer, so follow the exact sign at the entry.

  • What is the best dog walk?

Korzo and Molo Longo make a flat city loop; Trsat castle is the scenic climb if your dog handles stairs and heat.

  • Do dogs need a muzzle?

Croatia-wide dangerous-dog rules apply: restricted bull-type dogs and dogs formally classed as dangerous need extra controls, while ordinary dogs should be leashed in public. Public transport and ferries can require a muzzle for all dogs, so carry one even when you rarely use it.

  • Can I use public transport with a dog?

Autotrolej buses serve Rijeka, Opatija and nearby towns. Small dogs in carriers are easiest; larger dogs should travel leashed with a muzzle ready and may be refused on crowded services.

  • Where is the nearest emergency vet?

Rijeka is the main Kvarner referral point for out-of-hours care. Save both your nearest clinic and the current on-call contact before island trips.

  • Is this a good base for day trips with a dog?

Yes. Opatija, Krk town, Crikvenica and Ucka are all close, making Rijeka a practical base for mixed city, coast and mountain days.

  • How should I plan summer walks?

Use the waterfront early and avoid the exposed port edge at midday. Trsat is best before 09:00 or near sunset.
