Zagreb is the working capital and the natural road-trip entry point from central Europe. The pet city is built around two anchors: Maksimir Park in the east, and Jarun Lake to the south-west with dog-beach sections on the warm-water shore. Public transport is dog-accessible with a leash and muzzle. Veterinary depth is the country's deepest, including the University of Zagreb Faculty of Veterinary Medicine teaching clinic. Drive south on the A1 and the Adriatic opens in three hours.

Frequently asked: pets in Zagreb

  • Where can dogs walk and swim around Zagreb?

Maksimir Park (north-east) and Jarun Lake (south-west) are the two main pet walk destinations. Jarun has dedicated dog beaches on the western shore for warm-weather swimming. Both are reachable by tram and bus.

  • Are dogs allowed on Zagreb trams and buses?

ZET allows dogs on trams and buses with a leash and muzzle; small dogs in a closed carrier travel free. The rule is enforced inconsistently in summer, but rule-of-thumb: muzzle plus leash is the safe default.

  • Are there pet-friendly cafes in central Zagreb?

Outdoor terraces across Tkalčićeva and the lower town generally accept leashed dogs; many keep a water bowl by the door. Indoor seating depends on the venue; ask first.

  • Where is the nearest 24/7 vet in Zagreb?

Zagreb has multiple veterinary clinics with rotating night cover. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine clinic (Heinzelova) has the broadest specialist capacity. Save the current on-call number on arrival.

  • Can I take a dog up Medvednica or Sljeme?

Yes. The forested trails of Medvednica Nature Park north of Zagreb are open to leashed dogs. The cable car (gondola) accepts dogs at staff discretion; the road and bus go almost to the top in summer.

  • Is Zagreb a good entry point for road-tripping into the coast with a dog?

Yes. The A1 motorway connects Zagreb to Zadar (around 3 hours), Split (around 4 hours) and the Plitvice Lakes (around 2 hours). Service-area dog runs exist at most major rest stops.
